We’ve all seen those hilarious photos that employees take, post online and then discover by the end of the day, they no longer have a job. Can anyone say “viral”? They’re all funny and they all have us scratching our heads and asking ourselves, “Do these people know how tight the job market is right now?” A. Harrison Barnes, career coach and Hound.com founder, says they not only lose a job, but it’s likely these tweets and Facebook statuses, complete with photographs, could very well follow them into every interview they go on. They do serve a purpose though; they’re great reminders for all of us who appreciate that paycheck each week. So, with a lighter mood, we’ve put together our favorites over the past year. Take a look and see if yours made our “favorite online posts that surely resulted in a fired employee” list:

  • We love the story of the new employee who took a picture of her still-wet nails that she’d just painted with the “new employee’s manual” clearly in the picture. She wasted no time, to be sure. While we don’t know for sure, we’re quite confident there wasn’t a “second day on the job” for her with this employer.
  • One potential employer, as was its policy, checked a candidates Twitter and Facebook accounts just to get an idea of who’d be coming in for the 2 p.m. interview. The candidate, referring to an earlier interview tweeted, “hmm why hasn’t wal mart called me back..i better not have failed that drug test”. A. Harrison Barnes says that’s the epitome of what not to do when you’re in the market for a new job.
  • Another tweet, which still has us laughing inappropriately, read: “I hate my boss because her breath smells like a mouse crawled into her mouth and died 7 months ago”. The Hound.com founder says, “that’s just wrong!” We agree – but we’re still laughing.
  • At some point, most of us have a filter that prevents us from owning up to those behaviors that will not only get us fired, but could also land us in legal hot water – like driving under the influence. One tweet read, “Late For work! Most probably still a Little drunk!”. That’s another superb way of finding yourself in the unemployment line.
  • And our favorite: “I lied to my boss once about having uncontrollable bowels to get the day off and then it really happened”. One word: karma!

We may never understand why folks do the things they do and we certainly will never understand why they broadcast it to the world. We’re hoping these people learned from their mistakes and now approach their social networking efforts a bit less…well, socially. And if you’ve lost your job because of an online faux paus, be sure to visit Hound.com for the most current jobs around the country. Just be sure to avoid those behaviors that cost your last job!
